The soil in our garden

Today I begin a series of articles on the soil of our gardens

That our plants need for support in which to develop and grow their roots to anchor it while feeding on organic composition, combined with water, oxygen and minerals.

What is the ideal soil for gardening?

Which meets the needs of the plants in our gardens. The first thing then is to understand the needs and characteristics of our plants, know their origin can guide a lot, to see if we can recreate their natural habitat including soil type. The needs vary widely even in the same garden, some plants need soil to retain moisture, while others, on the contrary, thrive in well drained soils. Another aspect to take into account the soil type is associated with growing and breeding since for the same plant, the soil is not as if we sow seed that if we play from branch or stake.

Is there a basic composition of the garden soil?

We can say that if the plant as mentioned above need a bracket on which to anchor their roots, which is the mineral matter (sand, gravel, dirt, etc..), And one part organic matter (plant and / or animal decomposition (composting)) in which they feed, and of course the basic natural elements like air and water.

A basic composition in percentages would be: 45% minerals, 5% organic matter, 25% air and 25% water.

In the video, fall plants and flowers, it shows how very poor soils such as sand are colonized by different types of plants (see video http://costajardines.com/flores-y-plantas/8-cultivo-de/27-video -plant-and-flowers-de-otono.html) Of course the sand grains enclosing allow much air inside, the proximity to the river in this area provides plenty of water flowing in layers relatively close to the surface, just missing the organic nutrients, which in this case is given by a natural compost of decaying leaves of pine trees acacias and many other grasses that are born and die enriching the soil in the process.

How long does the process of decomposition of plants?

This depends on many factors, the size of the plant to break down, the action of microorganisms that accelerate the process, moisture, sunlight, etc.

But nature under ideal conditions is done in just a few months.

In my next article will explain how to recycle waste and make our gardens in a practical way to become natural and organic fertilizer.
