Garden Safety for Kids


Want to keep your home safe for your child? Well keep them safe in the garden as well. A flower garden or vegetable of them can be a wonderful thing for a child, but if left unattended or unsupervised by an adult, can become dangerous. Keeping your baby safe in the garden is as important as keeping safe at home.

Once children start eating fresh vegetables are grown right in their garden or gather fresh flowers, which do not always understand that certain things should not be eaten, smell or even touched.

Even when older children understand, do not always listen and children are just naturally curious and must always be supervised while in the garden.

Many plants are poisonous as Foxglove, Larkspur, Columbine, and Yarrow, so if you plan to plant a garden with the kids find out what is safe to plant and what can be potentially dangerous.

Gardening tools for children sizes are available is not expensive and done right for a child. Teach them how to collect, clean and put away their instruments, when not in use, and by all means do not leave your tools sharp unattended in the yard, the kids love to run barefoot.

When pruning, keep children off the streets, never leave the stems cut at their eye level

Keep all sharp instruments put away after use

If the plant stake, (tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) make sure stakes are high

Fence off areas of concern

Tools should always be pointed downward (pitchforks, rakes, shears, etc.)

Avoid using chemicals in the yard where the children will be, check for sharp rocks, glass and other objects that could injure themselves when they run and play

If you have a riding mower, do not let them ride or drive, do not leave it running and unattended or leave the keys in the ignition

Keep all chemicals stored in original containers under lock and key

Kids love water, especially in hot weather, keep a watchful eye if you have a water garden fountain, fish pond or water in your garden

Bees are good for pollination, but are known to cause serious reactions if stung, be alert and attentive
