Reducing the speed limit to save gas

In 1980, the speed limit on highways and motorways in Spain increased from 100 km / h per hour to 120 km / h. This limit remained in effect until March 2011, when it entered into force the new speed limit 110 km / h.

Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, First Deputy Prime Minister announced this measure in February 2011 and indicated that it was a temporary measure whose main objective was to reduce spending on petrol and diesel in response to rising oil prices caused by conflicts in the Arab world. Date is unknown where the measure shall cease to be effective, because it ignores how the social situation will continue in some of the major oil exporters.

The government aims to achieve a reduction in fuel consumption to generate savings is around 15% in gasoline and diesel 11%, these figures relate mainly to savings in oil imports., Must be considered that the figures will vary for each driver according to your driving, the situation in which the car is located and other factors as the speed needed for each vehicle is moving in the most efficient way possible.

While the entry into force of this measure has resulted in additional costs for the Spanish government. One is the need to change existing traffic signals, which indicate the limit of 120 km / h. To make this change has been made stickers with the new limit of 110 km / h. Another cost arises from the need to change the fixed speed cameras located along highways and freeways to adapt to the new limit. The Government this cost amounted to 250,000 euros.

According to a report by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT), oil consumption fell Automotive 7.9% in March, after the entry into force of the measure which generated a savings of 94.2 million euros. While some experts believe that the rising price of gasoline is also a factor to take into account when justifying the drop in consumption.

Given these results, MITYC considered to have achieved the goal it set. He also thanked the drivers whose behavior in complying with the new speed limits and efficient driving recommendations. It should be noted that not only contribute to lower fuel consumption but also avoid accidents, mishaps or "details" like broken moons always unwelcome.
